Nigeria needs climate change fund — Rep

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on  Climate Change, Hon.  Sam Onuigbo, has advocated the setting up of a dedicated fund  for climate  change issues facing the country.

Onuigbo also said the reality of the consequences of  climate change  has made it imperative for urgent solutions to be mobilized  following  adequate awareness and appreciation of the challenges.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the committee at the  National  Assembly, Onuigbo said given the multifarious nature of  climate change, it  requires a multi-stakeholder approach in seeking and  implementing  solutions, one of which is the establishment of a special  fund.

He said: “Essentially, the participatory requirement for  climate change  management may not be solved by new and dedicated  institution but by new  partnership and financing mechanisms. An innovative solution  might be the creation of a National Climate Fund to finance new  partnerships and  initiatives that will lead to fulfilling Nigeria’s  intended commitment to  climate change management.”
