Bayelsa: Sylva raises alarm over violent crimes

THE Sylva Campaign Organisation has expressed worries over what it described as the increasing rate of violent crimes in Bayelsa State, describing the trend as a threat to the rescheduled supplementary election in the  state.

A statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Chief Nathan Egba, called on the people of the state to hold Governor Seriake Dickson accountable for any breakdown of law and order.

“The APC is worried about the increasing rate of violent crimes, including kidnappings across the state, which is believed to be a direct result of the total abandonment of governance by the Dickson -led administration in favour of politics.

“We are not surprised for instance, that yesterday’s sitting of a Magistrate Court in Yenagoa to hear the bail application of APC leaders who were arrested in Oporoma on December 5, 2015 was scuttled.

“Authoritative sources alleged that the Presiding Magistrate was seriously warned by powerful government officials from appearing in court to hear the bail application.

“Even defence lawyers were alleged to have been harassed by unknown people, who have apparently taken a cue from all the violence and gangsterism perpetrated in various communities in the course of the on-going governorship election.

“We wish to call on the security agencies in the state to step up their intelligence and track down all those plotting to cause mayhem in the re-run poll with a view to compromising the election through massive rigging.”
