YENAGOA—THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Port -Harcourt zone, has faulted the Vice Chancellor of Michael Opara University of Agriculture, Umudike, MOUAU, Professor Hilary Edeoga, over the appointments of academic staff in the institution.
The Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Port Harcourt Zone, Professor Beke Sese, who addressed newsmen in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, yesterday, described the appointments of academic staff by the VC as a total negation of laid down rules and procedures guarding the appointments and promotions in the university system.
According to Sese, apart from meeting the requirements on qualifications and publications, the tenure for elevation to the next rank is between two to three years in Nigerian Universities, and five years from Senior Lecturer to Professor.
He regretted that in total disregard to laid down standards, out of the 34 appointments that were announced, 30 of the appointees were not suitably qualified. He accused the VC of promoting his cronies within the same year of their last promotions.
