THE Anambra State House of Assembly, yesterday, passed a motion urging Governor Willie Obiano to ban the holding of ceremonies on roads.
The motion, which was sponsored by 11 members, also urged the governor to direct the Commissioner for Transport, the Anambra State Traffic Management Agency, ATMA, and other relevant bodies to ensure immediate enforcement of the ban.
In the motion, the lawmakers said they were worried that celebration of burials, marriages and other festivals on the roads had become a common feature, especially in the urban centres regardless of vehicular movement and the attendant consequences.
The act, they said, depicts utter disrespect, disregard and violation of traffic rules and regulations and should therefore no longer be tolerated.
According to them, such ceremonies had tended to impede human and vehicular movements, adding that they portend great risk to human lives and valuable property.
They observed that since ATMA was vested with the statutory role of reducing the incidence and severity of road traffic accident by virtue of Section 10 (1) of the Anambra State Traffic Agency Law, it has the responsibility to ensure sanity on the roads in the state.
