Awka—THE Umucheke community, Umunze in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IG, over what it described as unlawful arrests and continued harassment of innocent people in the area.

The 21 people allegedly arrested over the matter are still being detained and the fear of the community was that those behind the action want them to remain in detention till 2016.

In the petition by the vice chairman, Mr. Peter Igwebuike, the community also urged the IG to investigate event of  October 14, 2015 in which one indigene  of Ubaha village, Ezira, also in Orumba South allegedly used the state Commissioner of Police to raid the community during which leaders of Umuncheke village were accused of armed robbery.

But the state police command said it was the police anti cult group that carried out the arrests, following threat to lives and property in the area.
