Complan tasks dieticians, nutritionists on malnutrition

By Gabriel Olawale

With an alarming statistics of 40 percent of hospitalised patients having malnutrition, Nigerian dieticians and nutritionists have been urged to take the bull by the horns and address the clinical crisis by proffering interventions via preventive measures that would guarantee adequate diet as well as therapeutic measures.

Making the call during a scientific symposium organised by Kraft Heinz makers of ”COMPLAN super milk’‘ recently in Lagos with the theme: “Malnutrition in Hospitalised Patients:  “A Situation of Hidden Hunger and Macronutrient Deficiencies”, a renowned dietician from the Dietetics department, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Patience Chima described malnutrition in hospitalised patients as a condition of global importance with Nigeria not spared.

Chima canvassed dietary advice and nutritional supplementations as solutions to overt malnutrition and malnutrition of patients during admission.

Citing several cases of patients who come in to the hospital with obvious malnutrition and several cases of patients that come in without being malnourished but later developed malnutrition during hospital admission, she identified macronutrients especially protein and overt caloric deficiency as principal culprits lacking in the patients.

Chima noted that malnutrition in patients increases stay in the hospital, brewing from steep reductions in muscle strength and respiratory function, decrease in physical fitness general apathy and fatigue.

Medical Detailing Manager-Nigeria Kraft Heinz Company, Mr. Victor Rowland in his keynote address on “Interventions from kraft Heinz at preventing and managing malnutrition in hospitalised patients” described the role of the company at ensuring optimal nutrition for the populace as part of its corporate social responsibility.

He said formulations in specific company brands may help to address the condition as both a preventive and therapeutic intervention.  Complan, he said, is a complete meal in a drink which has been recommended by doctors and dieticians for several years.

The drink is formulated with a balanced mix of 23 essential nutrients and essential amino acids and key micronutrients.
