MAIDUGURI—Senatorial aspirant for Borno Central by-elections, on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, and the immediate past Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Baba Kaka Garbai, has promised to address the lingering problem of poverty, unemployment and educational backwardness of his people.
According to him, these are some of the factors that gave rise to the Boko Haram sect.
Garbai, who spoke during his declaration at the party’s state secretariat in Maiduguri amid a crowd of supporters, including the state party Chairman, Alhaji Ali Dalori, and other executive members yesterday, said his decision to contest as senator for Borno Central was a result of the sudden death of Senator Ahmed Zanna.
Garbai said he was the right person to lead Borno Central into the Promised Land, and promised to bring to bear exemplary leadership and ensure that democratic governance prevailed.
He expressed displeasure over poverty, unemployment, educational backwardness and total neglect which, according to him, is the handiwork of lack of purposeful leadership that needed to be corrected.
He said that as the best man for the job, he would offer strategic leadership which would set his senatorial district back on track and also lift it to a higher level of advancement.
Garbai specifically promised to make youth empowerment and general well being of the people his priority, if elected.
He said: “Our quest is for a greater Borno and it is our hope that there will be transparency and the will of the people will always be allowed to prevail.
“But I advise other contenders, particularly those from the opposition parties, to desist from Do- or- Die politics. Rather, they must respect the collective will of the masses.
“The days when elective positions were meant for personal gains are over. Election is now based largely on who the people want and who can render service and stewardship.
“It is no longer about parties, but personalities involved, and if elected, I will ensure that the high poverty index, youth unemployment and other social ills in the society become a thing of the past.
“I will operate an open door policy where all, regardless of party affiliations, will have access to the senator, unlike what is being experienced now.’’
Garbai was accompanied to the venue by many APC stalwarts, including a member of the House of Representatives, representing Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Kadiri Rahis, among others.
