New intakes of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, have been charged to contribute their quota in building a world-class university through the instrumentality of excellence and integrity.

Addressing the Class of 2019 during the university’s recent matriculation ceremony, President of AUN, Dr. Margee Ensign warned them against looking for shortcuts to success.

“Excellence and integrity are not at all abstract. They have everything to do with the future of this institution, the value of your degree and your future as graduates of this institution.

“If AUN continues to be known throughout Nigeria as a place of high and uncompromising standards, of academic integrity and excellence, of genuine world-class education, then we have a great future. We shall be a beacon to the region, the nation, and the continent,” Ensign said.

The new intakes came from about 26 states in Nigeria, as well as the US, UK, Rwanda and Cameroon.

Harping on the need for hard work, the President said: “There is no magic wand we can use to build a great university. Having a wonderful digital e-library—probably the finest in Africa—won’t do it. Having an astonishingly generous Founder and benefactor won’t do it. Being selective in our student admissions won’t do it. Providing more scholarships won’t do it. Faculty members doing even better research won’t do it. Only you can build a great university.”

Commending the AUN community for the courage and compassionate spirit it displayed in managing the humanitarian crisis in the North-east, Ensign said: “I have been struck, particularly in the last year, by how successful AUN has been with regard to the third part of our motto –which is ‘Service.’

“Here in Yola, we have all been embroiled in the Boko Haram insurrection. The response of the AUN has been magnificent. The staff, faculty, and students have risen to the extraordinary challenges, sheltering refugees, feeding the hungry, teaching peace and job skills to the young, women, and the poor. No one could have done more. Thanks to all of you who did extraordinary service last year.”
