ABUJA—Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has challenged members of the legal profession on the need to uphold the ethics of the profession.
Osinbajo, a professor of law, gave the charge in Lagos, Sunday, while commissioning the renovated dining hall of the Nigerian Law School.
The renovation was done by South Atlantic Petroleum, SAPETRO, owned by former Minister of Defence, General T. Y. Danjuma (retd).
The Vice President, who commended SAPETRO on its efforts in renovating the hall to the desired standard, also expressed displeasure at the current decline of respect for the legal profession, saying the practice had lost several of its values.
He said: “This is a challenge that we lawyers in this generation have; to make our profession a noble one as it was meant to be. To ensure that issues of justice and integrity are taken seriously to aid in the task of nation building.”
Osibanjo, however, stated that the event was also an opportunity for lawyers to examine ways of elevating the legal profession to enable it effectively entrench justice in the land.
A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice President, Eunice Akro, stated that the immediate past governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, represented by Badejo Okusanya, graced the occasion.
Other dignitaries at the event included T. Y. Danjuma; Director General, Nigerian Law School, Olarenwaju Onadeko; Chairman, Council of Legal Education, O. C. Okocha; Justices of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, both serving and retired, royal fathers, amongst others.
