Enugu—THE crisis rocking the Enugu chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, over the alleged misappropriation of N400 million during the last general elections took a new dimension, yesterday, following the arrest of the party’s zonal Vice Chairman for Enugu-East senatorial zone, Chief Anike Nwoga.
The arrests followed a petition to the state Police Command by the party’s gubernatorial candidate in the April 11 election in the state, Mr. Okey Ezea, accusing Nwoga of defaming his character in a statement where he (Nwoga) alleged that the over N400 million campaign funds sent to the state was misappropriated by him (Ezea) and other party officers.
The police also invited a journalist over a report on the said “misappropriated” money.
Ezea in the petition had asked the police to arrest Nwoga and also prevail on him to prove the alleged misappropriation of funds and had threatened to initiate legal action in event the police failed to get to the truth of the matter.
Nwoga and the journalist, after being quizzed were however, left off the hook temporarily and were asked to return to the station on Friday this week.
Nwoga told reporters on phone that “I got a call when I was away that policemen besieged my house, but when they couldn’t see me, they dropped an invitation letter. Immediately I returned, as a law abiding citizen, I had to go to the police. As I speak with you, am making statement at the State CID,”he said.
It took the timely intervention of some journalists in the state as well as the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu to get the reporter out of a possible detention after his written statement.
