Nigeria Football Federation yesterday refused to renew the contract of Super Falcons coach, Edwin Okon. His assistant, Christopher Danjuma was appointed by the NFF as an interim coach.

Okon was hoping to retain his job, but his performance at the ongoing FIFA Women World Cup put a halt to his wishes.

The Super Falcons made an early exit after finishing as the weeping girls of group D, which though was dubbed the toughest in the tournament. Okon also displayed uncivilised conduct by refusing to shake hands with coaches whose tactics proved superior.  NFF technical committee chairman, Felix Anyansi explained that a more capable coach will be employed to make the team more competitive at the world level.

“The contract given to the crew has elapsed with the Women’s World Cup in Canada. Mr. Christopher Danjuma will now take over the team in acting capacity, pending the appointment of a substantive coaching crew, the process of selecting a capable replacement has began.

“We commend Okon and his crew for the services rendered to the country. They did well to reclaim the African Women Championship title for the country in Namibia in October 2014, thus qualifying the team for the Women’s World Cup in Canada,” Anyansi said.

Okon, who’s is also River’s Angels coach led the Super Falcons to the African Women Championship title last year in Namibia. Though the Super Falcons did not get best of preparations for the world cup in Canada, Okon’s technical capability was largely blamed for the team’s lack of cutting edge in the tournament.

He refused to comment on the development yesterday when contacted. But team captain, Evelyn Nwanbuoko said the players have no choice but to abide by the decision of the NFF.

The Falcons will play Equatorial Guinea for a slot at the 2016 Olympic. The first leg is billed for Port Harcourt July 18 and the second leg will be decided in Bata August 2.
