As Qatar prepares grounds for a groundbreaking and successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup in 2022 the country’s football administrators plan to show its readiness for the global football tournament with the final of the 2015 Emir Cup holding this Saturday in Doha.
Qatar, billed to host the first World Cup in the Middle East region in 2022, is planning to pull all stunts to showcase its unique offerings to the world via the tournament.
Though the first ball of the tournament is still some seven years away from being kicked, the country plans to use all available sporting championship to gather the experience it need to host a tournament that will leave a legacy for the people of the Middle East.
A starting point for the organising council for the 2022 World Cup is this weekend’s Emir Cup final, which is the country’s most popular sports event.
Fans and players, sponsors and organizers all wait eagerly for the time when Emir Cup is set for kick-off. The launch of the Emir Cup is nothing short of a festival as sports fans in Qatar impatiently wait for this event.
Since the very beginning, the Emir Cup has enjoyed a special place in the country’s national sports calendar. A dream for any football player, Emir Cup matches bring out the best in every team and coaches.
The chance of receiving the trophy from none other than the Emir is often described as a dream by players. The Emir Cup was first played in 1972 and won by Al Ahli. The event is contested, every season, by 18 Qatar Stars League (QSL) and Second Division teams. Al Sadd, the most successful team, is the defending champions.
L ast year in Doha, a goal apiece from Raul Gonzalez, Ibrahim Majed and Hasan Khalid Haydos helped Al Sadd trounce Al Sailiya 3-0 to win the Emir Cup.
