National Coalition of Niger Delta Ex-Agitators, NCNDE-A, has described calls on President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, to scrap the amnesty programme as misleading and capable of causing crisis in the relatively peaceful Niger Delta region.
Speaking in Abuja, the group’s National President, Israel Akpodoro, said the amnesty programme, especially the Phase 1, achieved a lot in the region in terms of meaningfully engaging idle youths.
He urged Buhari to be wary of such calls and the persons who make them, adding that rather than abrogate the programme, the president-elect should overhaul it, preparing it towards more meaningful human development devoid of discriminative tendencies.
The ex-militant leader said: “We see people today who are pretending to be All Progressives Congress, APC, members. It is such characters that want the amnesty programme scrapped to plunge the incoming APC administration into avoidable crisis.”
