Delta election tribunal receives 40 petitions

ASABA—Delta State Governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, has received a total of 40 petitions, challenging the outcome of the 2015 general elections.

Three petitions are challenging the election of the state governor-elect, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, while one is challenging the election of Senator James Manager, Delta South.

Seven petitions were received for the House of Representatives election and 29 for the state House of Assembly election. It was learned that the tribunal will soon commence sitting.

Secretary to the Tribunal, Mr Al’Sadiq Abubakar, told Vanguard on phone, that the tribunal will stop receiving petitions 21 days from the day the results of the elections were declared.

According to Abubakar, all the petitions were received at the tribunals between April 17 and May 3, explaining that the tribunals are made up of a chairman and two members each.

He added that the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will sit at High Court 3, beside Grand Hotel, while the National Assembly/Legislative House Tribunal will sit at High Court 5, both in Asaba, the state capital.
