Two dead, as fire engulfs building in Lagos

A storey building located on Authority Avenue, in Ile-Iwe, Ikotun, Lagos, went up in flames in the early hours of yesterday, killing a man and his sister-in-law.

However, his wife and three children were reportedly rescued with mild burns.

This is just as an explosion occurred in a welding workshop yesterday in Festac Town, Lagos, killing a 35-year-old man.

The fire incident, as gathered, occurred at about 2am. At press time, the cause was unknown.

Report said the fire started from the flat on the top floor of the building, while the occupants, identified as the Oseghales, were asleep.

The desperate shout for help from the Oseghales was said to have jolted neighbours from sleep. But help was far from their reach as no one dared go inside the flat owing to thick smoke.

Residents reportedly put up effort to contain the situation to no avail, until the arrival of fire service men.

Mrs Oseghale, as gathered, put up a brave act by pulling off the window net in her bedroom, from where she stuck her children’s head out, to allow them breath in fresh air.

They were reportedly in that position until part of the walls of the window was broken by firemen, from where they were rescued.

However, same could not be said of her husband, a sailor.

It was, however, discovered that only the Oseghales flat located on the front wing of the building and the kitchen of the flat behind it were affected.

Occupant of the flat with the affected kitchen said: “ When I heard the alarm, I ran out of the flat and was calling out to residents to come to our aid.

“By then, Mama Ofure (Mrs Oseghale) was calling out to me to help her and her children from her bedroom. I banged on neighbours gate to come out but nobody came out at first.” Perhaps they thought we were being attacked by robbers.”

Mrs Oseghale, who hails from the east but married to an Edo man, left the hospital where she was being treated, saying she wanted to go and see her husband, who she was made to believe was in another hospital.
