By Simon Ebegbulem

BENIN—Edo State Police Command, yesterday, paraded 24 suspected kidnappers, cultists and armed robbers, including one Etopa Sadiq, who was alleged to have participated in last week’s attack on some banks and police stations at Owo, Ondo State.

The command also disclosed that eight persons were arrested during the last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections, saying the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, would prosecute them.

Sadiq was arrested with bullet wounds around Ibillo in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the state after a gun battle with policemen.

The state’s Police Commissioner, Samuel Adegbuyi, who paraded the suspects, said his men engaged the robbers in a shootout at Ibillo, after a tip-off.

The commissioner said the robbers fled when they felt the superior fire power of his men, abandoning their arms and ammunition.

Items recovered from them include 32 AK-47 magazines, three LAR rifle magazines, seven TO6 rifle magazine, 23 tear gas canisters, three boxes of ammunition, 12 rounds dummy cartridges, 23 live ammunition, three police crash helmets, one set of police uniforms, among others.

He added that efforts were on to arrest the fleeing robbers.

However, the suspect denied involvement in the Owo bank robbery operation, claiming he was arrested while travelling through Ibillo.
