Oyo PDP crisis deepens after governorship defeat

By Ola Ajayi

IBADAN—THE pains of defeat which the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Oyo State suffered in the just concluded governorship election became more excruciating yesterday as chieftains of the party rekindled another ember of discord over transformation of the party and repositioning it for future elections.

The party has lost elections in two consecutive political dispensations as a result of unending internal wrangling.

The latest disagreement is between a notable chieftain of the party, Alhaji Adebisi Olopoenia, and the state executive.
Olopoenia was reacting to an earlier comment by the Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr. Kehinde Salawu, who reportedly threatened sanctions against those who are trying to put the losses behind them and forge a new PDP.

He wondered where the Publicity Secretary of the party was when it was floored by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state and why he kept sealed lips when the ruling party was painting PDP black on pages of newspapers.

Referring to the state executive members, Olopoenia said: “Everyone knows they are failed executives of the party. I do not even expect them to talk at this point in time. They should come and tell the  whole world what they have done towards the progress of the party in recent  times, especially in the last general elections.

“ I can say that all they know is to share bags of rice and collect money from aspirants in the guise of giving them tickets, a promise  which they did not fulfill 100 percent. Some of those they collected money  from and failed to give tickets to contest the last election are still  raining curses on them.”
