By JAPHET ALAKAM

Having realised the missing link, after many years of teaching and practice as a lawyer and lecturer, Prof. Joseph E.O Abugu, head of department of Commercial and Industrial Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos is set to effect a change in the Nigerian law books stand with the introduction of two new academic and practice textbooks , Principles of Corporate Law in Nigeria and Company Securities: Law and Practice second edition to the law book stands.

The public presentation the two books which by all standards will change the course of law practice and study in Nigeria is scheduled to hold on Thursday March 5th, 2015 at the Agip Recital Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos. The event which will be graced by eminent personalities, top business executives, members of the academia, students and others is expected to kick off by 1.00 pm.

The Principles of Corporate Law in Nigeria is designed to provide in-depth theoretical and practical insight of the subject to the law researcher either as a student or practitioner. While the second book, Company Securities: Law and Practice, second edition is designed to further deepen available literature on securities law and strengthen the case for its inclusion in the course curricula of Nigerian universities.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Prof. Joseph E.O Abugu, who is also the Principal Consulting Counsel in the firm of Abugu &Co., Solicitors said that the move was a response to the over reliance by Nigerian law students on English law textbooks for their studies and practice

On why he is presenting the two books, Abugu said, “the first of the books, Principles of Corporate Law in Nigeria will be the first authoritative academic and practice text on company law in Nigeria. Until now, a lot of our students and practitioners are relying on English textbooks in these areas of the law.

This is a holistic effort to provide both students and practitioners, a full compendium on the law in Nigeria. So its going to be useful tool, not only to students, practitioners and judges.”

The second book, Company Securities: law and Practice, second edition, “the first edition was published in 2005 and it remained the pioneer and leading academic and practice textbook on company’s securities law and practice in Nigeria. No other one known to me has come to fore since I first published that in 2005. Developments in that area of law that has taken place particularly since 2007 has now been taken into consideration. The book is now much more expanded, it use to be a nine chapter book but now it is expanded to 17 chapters. Contemporary issues, issues and laws relevant to the securities industry have now been adequately addressed.”

Continuing, he stated that it will be a delight, not only for students, corporate laws practitioners, security law practitioners and members of the Nigeria Stock exchange community particularly stock brokers, investment advicers, Registrars of companies and company secretary of major corporations in Nigeria will find it useful.
