ASABA- THE meeting between the governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, Ijaw, Itsekiri leaders and Nigeria National Petroleum Authority, NNPC,  over the groundbreaking of the $16 billion Delta Gas City project has commenced in Asaba.

The closed-door parley started at about 12.20 pm,  but before journalists were asked out, the governor explained that it was convened to address outstanding issues on the project.

He asserted that the instruction to resolve all lingering matters was given by President Goodluck Jonathan after he met with representatives of the different ethnic groups during visit to Asaba, last week.

His words, “He gave me a directive to work with the Ministry of Petroleum and by extension, NNPC, Presidency and communities so that we can have a date before the election.”

The governor emphasized the delay in the groundbreaking was not that anybody stopped the president, but because of insecurity issues and his position that he did not want crisis from the area after the groundbreaking.

He told Vanguard that contrary to the report that March 13 had been fixed for the groundbreaking, no date has been agreed by the parties.

He enjoined participants to speak without animosity at the meeting for amicable resolution of issues at stake.
