POLLS: Southern leaders ask Jega to quit

ABUJA—AHEAD of the Presidential and other elections slated for March 28 and April 11, Southern leaders on the aegis of Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly, SNPA yesterday wrote the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, asking him to resign now saying the commission was not prepared for the elections.

According to the SNPA leaders from the South South, South West and South East geo- political zones of the country, Jega was not prepared for the elections as he was determined to throw the country into chaos, claiming that Nigerians had lost faith in him. They argued that resigning would help him retrieve what was left of his integrity, alleging that indices had shown that the elections had already been rigged to favour the north as he was allegedly acting a script.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Co-ordinating Secretary of SNPA, Dr. Ifedi Okwenna, claimed Jega was hobnobbing with members of the Northern Elders Forum, perfecting moves to ensure that the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, won the election through the lopsided distribution of Permanent Voter Cards.

SNPA is led by former Vice President Alex Ekwueme; one time Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South Leader, Chief Edwin Clark; Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu as South East, South South and South West leaders leaders, with others like former governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife; Chief Walter Ofonagoro; Senator Femi Okurounmu, among others as members.

Flanked by the Secretary, South South of SNPA, Dr. Ayakeme Whiskey, Okwenna, accused Jega of promoting an ethnic agenda by favouring the North against the South, with what they described an unholy conspiracy between INEC and the Northern Elders to install a Northern President.

The Southern leaders said, “Our dear Professor, let us remind you that promise of credible election does not come by word of mouth alone, but by actions and plans put in place. So far your plans and activities show you and your Commission as unprepared and are determined to throw Nigeria into avoidable chaos.”
