Oshoala: Greatness beckons new African queen

NEWLY crowned African Women’s Footballer of the year 2014, Asisat Oshoala has said that winning the prize means a lot to her and her career, as she capped a brilliant 2014 with continental recognition.

The 20-year old Rivers Angel striker, was named the CAF Africa women’s footballer of the year 2014, at the CAF African player of the year awards ceremony, held Thursday night in Lagos. She also carted home the African women’s young player of the year award, to cap a remarkable evening for her.

She told Saturday Sports Vanguard shortly after winning the awards that “ I want to say that these awards mean a lot to me, to my career.

I don’t see it as a. stop for me. I will keep on working hard, it’s going to serve as an assignment for me to be a better player next year and always. I thank God for all the people who voted for me, it was a very good year for me and hopefully I will continue to get better.”

Oshoala had a memorable performance in 2014 where she was named the Most Valuable Player award at the 2014 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, where she helped Nigeria finish second behind winners Germany.

Last November, she was also voted the Most Valuable Player after winning the 2014 African Women’s Championship in Namibia with Nigeria.

The highly rated forward would not want to disparage the Nigerian female league as she paid special tribute to the Nigerian female football saying it was the best in the continent.

Revealing that numerous foreign clubs were seeking her signatures, Oshoala who is also expected to feature for the Super Falcons when they play at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada later this year, refused to open up on her future destination.

“ Talking about my move from the local league to somewhere outside, actually and sincerely, I have a lot of clubs coming up for me now ,but I am yet to decide. No doubt about this, Nigerian league is a very good league as you can see, I am a living testimony to that. If as a player playing in our local league coming out as a best female player in Africa it shows that our league is good. As for whether I will leave Africa for now, I am yet to decide because what I think I am going out to find, I feel I have it at home here”, she said.
