Lagos—The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Kayode Aderanti, yesterday called on politicians to conduct electioneering campaigns peacefully.
Aderanti made the call at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja.
He also called on the Lagos State Signage and Advertising Agency, LASAA, to desist from any act that could put its integrity in doubt.
“I wish to draw the attention of all to the lifting of ban on political campaigns by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which has kick-started the campaign toward the general elections.
“The command wishes to assure all validly nominated candidates of the various political parties of a level playing field that will guarantee credibility of the electoral process.
“Various agencies of government are also encouraged to be fair to all concerned in all their oversight functions to ensure that no party is shut out of the electoral space,” Aderanti said.
He said that there had been complaints against LASAA by candidates, who alleged removal of their campaign billboards.
He urged LASAA to give equal opportunities to candidates of all political parties to disseminate their campaign messages.
Aderanti said that the command would decisively deal with any individual or agency of government that would disrupt political campaigns or general elections.
“I have directed all the area commanders to be on the lookout and arrest anybody that attempts to remove any billboard or poster of any candidate under whatever guise,” he said.
The police chief thanked Lagos residents for their cooperation during the festive period.
