Glo-CAF award: Toure worthy winner — Ikpeba

•Says Enyeama should be proud of being among best three in Africa

By Jacob Ajom

Former Super Eagles player, Victor Ikpeba has described Ivory Coast and Manchester City playmaker, Yaya Toure as worthy winner of the 2014 Glo-CAF African Player of the Year award.

Toure on Thursday won the coveted award for a record fourth time, beating challenges from Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Super Eagles safe hands Vincent Enyeama.

Ikpeba, who won the award in 1997 said Toure stands above other African players at the moment.

“Sometimes we are sentimental in this country. I doff my hart for those who do the voting because they cannot be faulted in this case. The award is not just for a player’s contributions to his national team but also what the player does for his club. Yes, Ivory Coast did not do well at the Nations Cup and the World Cup but Yaya Toure’s contributions to Manchester City, where he plays among the best players in the world and still stands out cannot go unnoticed,” Ikpeba said.

As for Enyeama, Ikpeba said, “Vincent should be proud of what he has achieved. Being among the best three players in Africa is no mean achievement, particularly, when you consider the fact that he is a goalkeeper. It is always very difficult for goalkeepers to win awards. Enyeama should be proud.”
