FRSC records 120 deaths

By Festus Ahon

ASABA—AS Nigerians still bask in the euphoria of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, yesterday, said 120 deaths were recorded during the yuletide.

The Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, who spoke in Asaba during his visit to the Delta State Command in continuation of the monitoring of the patrol operations in the country, said there was 14 percent reduction in auto crashes across the country, compared to 2013/2014, which according to him was made “possible with good planning.”

He said the country was partitioned into 23 corridors, which were effectively manned by personnel of the corps with logistics from the World Bank and the Federal Ministry of Works.

He said: “That helped cover all the critical roads. The focus now is on sustaining the gains we recorded and how to sustain this and our programme for the year, especially the area of speed limiting devices, which enforcement is from June 1.

“One of the issues for us is the enforcement of overloading rule; use of phone while driving and speed violation. We believe we should be able to put them all under control. We are set for the year and the officers are well equipped for these tasks.

“We still have a week more. So officers and marshals are still on the roads to ensure that those who are returning to their various locations get there safely. The officers and marshals have put up a brilliant performance.”
