Yuletide: Akwa Ibom bans firecrackers

By Chioma Onuegbu

Uyo— Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gabriel Achong, has warned members of the public, particularly the users and marketers of explosives, such as firecrackers, to desist henceforth as those caught in the act would face the wrath of the law during the Christmas period.

Achong, who gave the warning in a statement in Uyo yesterday, explained that the ban on the use of explosives, especially during the Yuletide season, was to avoid distractions that would create opportunity for hoodlums to perpetrate crimes and criminality in the state.

He warned the youths and persons who engage in masquerading and cultural displays to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the season, saying his administration will not tolerate any breach of the peace.

His words: “As the yuletide period approaches, marketers and buyers, who are in the habit of using and dealing in explosives, such as firecrackers, should desist henceforth as this could cause distractions and threat to security.”

Achong restated the commitment and readiness of the men and officers of his command to ensure the safety of lives and property of the citizenry and residents, not just during the Christmas season, but at all times.
