Eaton Nigeria industries has identified the use of renewable energy as an answer to addressing the challenges of power demand in the West Africa, utility network. Speaking during a panel discussion at the West African Power Industry Convention, Charles Iyo, Regional Sales Manager, West Africa, stated that African countries have excellent solar irradiances, dependable wind areas, and land for renewable power plants capable of providing the energy demand for the region.

Addressing a session of industry practitioners on the topic ‘Options for increased access to electricity in West Africa: The case for a regional electricity market’ Mr. Iyo said the demand for electricity in the region is outstripping supply. Therefore, the solution is in being able to provide a source of power that is cost effective and requires little maintenance.

“Today’s utilities are under extreme pressure to improve reliability, drive operational efficiencies and reduce costs. Therefore, the Eaton solutions for managing power demand lies in an adaptable, secure and responsive infrastructure, consistent distribution of reliable, efficient and high-quality power, enhanced safety to protect people, property and the environment.” Iyo said.

According to Iyo, the economics of rural electrification systems are competing with other government programs for funding with the former often being neglected. He stated that solar especially, can quickly lower the cost of already widely used diesel and can be rapidly deployed to remote and urban areas.

Mr. Iyo stressed that since demand for electrical power in Western Africa is growing rapidly, renewable costs is dropping rapidly with South Africa taking the lead and Ghana already having an attractive incentive plan.

“Renewable costs are dropping rapidly with solar and wind already delivering cost savings for multiple applications ultimately reducing the cost for grid investment.”

Outlining the benefits of renewable solutions, Iyo said, solar is simple and has a wide range of applications; it is easy to deploy and payback through reduced diesel costs; it reduces the grid build out requirements and provides local jobs.

Eaton has solutions for each type of renewable power as well as provides the quality, safety, and reliability that is critical for success and lowest overall cost for the long term.
