The grand finale of the 2nd Benin Chess Tournament comes up today at the indoor sports hall, Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Benin City.
The tourney tagged “Oba’s Cup” which started on Monday has witnessed a very high standard in terms of play and organisation.
Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF) President, Lekan Adeyemi and his predecessor, CP Sani Mohammed and the State Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo are expected to grace the final.
Favourite for the coveted trophy is Ikegbunam Johnson in the U-10 category who has recorded four straight wins, with just one game left to determine his fate. His brother, Ikegbunam Daniel with same number of wins and points in the U-16 cadre looks good for the trophy.
The U-14 category winner will be decided between the two contestants Osadebe Michael and Uwadia Osaze as both players have won same number of games (four each) and have four points respectively.
Meanwhile, the race for the master’s trophy will also be determined as all the players have every opportunity to lift the trophy and the star prize money of N80, 000.
