Labour shuts down Imo school over teacher’s attack

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Imo State Chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has ordered immediate closure of Obosima Secondary Technical School, following the brutalization of a female teacher by students of the institution.

Vanguard had reported, last Friday, that the teacher, Mrs. Mary-Ann Oguezuonu, was attacked with machetes and other dangerous weapons in the school’s staff room by students, for cautioning a female student said to have formed the habit of wearing skimpy uniform to school.

Imo NUT gave the directive in a statement by the Assistant Secretary and the state Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Dr. Reginald Anyadike.

The directive, which was equally aired on Imo Broadcasting Cooperation, IBC, Owerri, ordered teachers in the school to stop attending classes until further notice.

The statement, however, directed the teachers to be reporting daily at the NUT state Secretariat along Owerri-Port Harcourt Expressway, Owerri, for briefing.

At press time, a team of medical personnel was still battling to save the life of the teacher, who sustained several machete cuts from the students.

When contacted, the teacher’s relation, Mr. Francis Moore, said: “The matter has been reported to the police and some arrests have been made. But the main suspect, Chimaobi Precious Agu, is still at large as we speak.”
