President of Pentathlon Federation, Dr Jonathan Nnaji has expressed hope that with the coming of Pentathlon in the Nigerian sporting scene, Team Nigeria would have an edge in adding more medals at international competitions.
‘’It’s a good thing that we have Pentathlon and many Nigerians have embraced the sport and have the potentials of winning laurels for Team Nigeria’’, Nnaji said after the inauguration of the Federation in Lagos by officials of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
The modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport that comprises five events: Shooting, Swimming, Fencing, athletics and Horse riding and President Nnaji said that so many Nigerian athletes who have clamouring for it have been over-joyed and have been making contacts at the states.
A prominent aspect of modern pentathlons is the point system, whereby each competitor is awarded a certain number of points based on their performance in each specific event. The overall winner is the competitor with the highest point total at the end of the five pentathlon events.
Prominent Nigerians with experience have been elected to pilot the affairs of the sport with Olufemi Abioye as the Secretary General.
Other members include; Hon Bappa Misau Aliu(Vice President), Dr Ferguson Oluigbo, Maccido Garba Gusau, Mako Sylvester, Lt. Col. U. O. Olatoye, Charity Igbinedion, Peter Okoro, Tony Ubani and Mohammed Ismaila She.
