THE two labour centres in the country, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, counterpart, yesterday in Abuja, called on all members of the Labour party, LP, not to participate in the controversial convention slated for October 11 in Akure, Ondo State.
NLC and TUC, therefore, mandated their National Labour Political Commissions to organise an all-inclusive stakeholders’ meeting tomorrow to discuss a way forward for the Labour Party, LP.
This is coming against the backdrop of defection of the only governor of the party, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
NLC and TUC, promoters of LP, in a joint statement, said the controversial LP convention which venue was chosen in deference to the office of the defected governor, was no longer tenable.
In the statement signed by Presidents of NLC and TUC, Abdulwaheed Omar and Bobboi Kaigama, respectively, said: “The die has now been cast, and Governor Mimiko, who was elected governor of Ondo State for a second time running, has defected to the PDP.
“This has obviously brought remarkable changes and challenges to the Labour Party. One implication of this action of the Governor is that he is no longer a member of the LP.”
