THE Deputy Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Lagos Chapter, Mr. Adedoyin Adesina has said that total free education corrupts the educational system.
Speaking to a cross section of people on the topic Effective teaching, he said that free education has made students not to be serious and focused with their education, adding that parents hardly buy books for their children because they believe education is free and they tend to wait and expect the government to provide books for the children.
According to him “if you give students assignments to do at home, they will not have textbooks to work on “. He also said “students themselves don’t buy books. They wait and hope the government provides them the books needed.
He also said that what makes teaching ineffective is that in a class, there are always too many students which brings about distractions and loss of focus on what the teachers are teaching.
He noted that lack of classrooms is another factor that makes teaching ineffective, adding that teachers are not the cause of the problems in the education sector but policies on education.
He said policies on education, especially the curriculum, do not make for effective teaching. According to him, the scheme of work being set by the curriculum planners cannot be exhausted.
Taiwo Olaniran who also contributed to the effectiveness of teaching recommended, saying “even with the policy, teachers can make teaching ineffective by making his teaching interesting and interactive for students to focus totally on what is being taught, despite having a large number of students”.
Recommendation also made, based on number of students is that teachers should group the students in class and draft out time table on days the various grouped students will be taught, to enable the teachers to cover the curriculum and make teaching effective.
