The FCT Emergency Management Agency, FEMA has identified some Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs camp at Sabon Kuchingoro, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory and commenced head count for onward distribution of relief materials to them.

The Director, FEMA, Alhaji Abbas Idriss who spoke to Vanguard in Abuja said the head count was necessary in order to ascertain the number of those involved and what needs there were.

Idriss said without the head count exercise, statistics of number of women, aged, children and men would not be known which could obstruct fair distribution of relief materials. According to the Director, ‘Now that statistics have been gotten, we have started making arrangements for relief materials. We have also contacted our stakeholders in the Health and Human Secretariat and also the Water Board to provide health and water facilities for these IDPs”.

“The IDPs camp is a make shift one and consist mainly of indigenes of Borno State who have had to flee their homes due to insurgency in the North-East. Some of the inmates who spoke to FEMA officials told harrowing stories of how they fled their homes and made their way to the Federal Capital Territory”.

The Director further said the Minister of the FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed is concerned about disaster management and IDPs are a result of conflicts in some parts of the country, so there is no question about us ensuring that they are catered for and provided with the basic necessities to ameliorate their plight.
