Controversy trails shooting, detention of citizen Ogedegbe

UGHELLI—Controversy is currently trailing the alleged shooting and detention of Vincent Ogedegbe at a police checkpoint, along Oko-Idiorwa Orogun Road, Orogun in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State by Corporal Anthony Jackson as a rights group, Centre for The Vulnerable and the Underprivileged, CENTREP, and the Police are singing different tunes on the incident.

While the group is alleging that the police shot the victim for no just cause, the police alleged that the victim was involved in oil well vandalism and that he was trying to disarm the culprit when he was shot on the leg.

The culprit is attached to Nigeria Police post, Orogun.

CENTREP, in a statement by its Executive Director, Oghenejabor Ikimi, sequel to a letter to Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Alkali Baba, by F. O. Ogherohwo & Co on behalf of the victim, stated that Ogedegbe was allegedly shot on the right leg with an AK47 rifle in the presence of his wife and children having been abruptly stopped by one of the policemen at the checkpoints.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the shooting, stated that Mr. Ogedegbe was wanted in connection with the vandalization of Oil Well 14 at Orogun, adding that investigation was ongoing.
