LAGOS—Access to Justice, AJ, a Human Rights group, has called on the government to ensure that those who were involved in the alleged assault of a High Court judge in Ekiti State, Justice John Adeyeye, did not go unpunished.
According to the non-governmental organisation, the silence of the authority over the issue has demonstrated that the sense of impunity has overtaken the nation’s sense of responsibility.
Access to Justice in the statement by Chinelo Chinweze, noted that the failure to apprehend those who allegedly attacked another judge, Justice Isaac Ogunyemi of the same High Court three days earlier necessitated the fresh attack on Justice Adeyeye.
“Those responsible must be brought to book so that this impunity is not allowed to flourish.”
The group described the attack as an “unbridled affront on the Hon. Judge. It is shameful, vile, barbaric and grossly contemptuous of the person of Justice Adeyeye and the authority he exercises as a Judge.
“It is a brutal attack on the administration of justice and the integrity of the justice system in Nigeria. It undermines the independence of the judiciary and the duty of judges to decide disputes without fear or molestation.
“This attack on judges and the administration of justice must be repressed and repelled with all the power and authority of the State,” It added.
