LOKOJA—The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS, has attributed the collapse of the education sector, especially the mass failure recorded in the last West African School Certificate Examination, WAEC, to the failure of the government to invest in the development of teachers.

ASUSS also said the mass failure was a direct implication of the series of vices that had bedevilled the education sector in the country over the years.

The Kogi State Chairman of the association, Mr Ojo Matthew Ranti who spoke in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, yesterday, however charged stakeholders in the education sector to accept their responsibilities by finding solution to the ugly trend.

His words, “Government has done little or nothing to the problems of empty laboratories and libraries, acute shortage of teachers especially in key subjects.

“It has done nothing towards solving the problems of dilapidated structures, unsuitable teaching and learning environment, poor mobilisation and funding of the supervisory and inspectorate units of education ministry and parastatals.

“Even if all other stakeholders, including government fail to brace up to this challenge, we must in order to sustain the integrity of our profession, put in extra effort to remedy the ugly situation.”
