Superbike speed queen on African Voices

The exciting story of South Africa’s superbike speed queen, Janine Davies, will be told during this weekend’s edition of CNN International’s African Voices, a 30-minute magazine programme sponsored by Globacom.

The show runs on CNN International at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday and at 4.30 a.m., 12.30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Viewers can also watch the repeat broadcast on Monday at 3:30 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. and on Tuesday at 5.30 a.m.

Davies,25, is South Africa’s first female superbike racer to compete on a national level. She is one of only nine women in the county who compete in motorbike racing on a national level, one of only three who race 600cc bikes and soon she will be the only woman in the country to be racing a 1000cc bike in the South African National Championships.

Davies has dedicated her time trying to prove that women can compete alongside men, one superbike race at a time. In South Africa, motorcycles modified for power and speed, generally known as superbikes, are mainly raced by men. But she came to limelight when she took up the challenge and competed in the sport at the national level.

On African Voices, the 25-year-old superbike racer from Benoni  talks about what it is like to be a woman competing in a male-dominated sport, her need for speed and keeping a balance in her life. She also talks about her racing aspirations and how she is working to encourage women to participate in sports.

The programme promises to be a delightful one as Davies who has been racing motorbikes competitively since 2004 says being a woman racing against a bunch of men, doesn’t bother her a bit.

“Men don’t like competing against women and they like it even less when they lose to a woman,” she says. Even then, she says she races because she is in love with it and not because she feels that she has something to prove. “I love sport, speed and adrenalin. This is my passion and when something is your passion, then you don’t give up easily”.
