Abuja  – The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on Tuesday said it would dialogue with President Goodluck Jonathan on the operations of the third tier of government.

NULGE National President Ibrahim Khaled made this known when he visited, Prof. Rufai Alkali, Special Adviser to the President on Politics, in Abuja.

Khaled said the union would dialogue with the president because the just-concluded national conference discussed so much on local governments.

“We the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees decides that at this critical time, we need to pay special courtesy visit to Mr President for so many reasons.

“We believe we need to brief Mr President, particularly regarding the operations of the third tier of government in Nigeria.

“Throughout the stay of the president in leadership no local government, out of the 774 councils, have cried of not receiving its statutory allocation even for one month.

“When Mr President initiated SURE-P, local government system was adequately incorporated into the programme.

“The national conference dwelt too much on local government issues; we felt it is very necessary for us to make ourselves available before Mr President and dialogue with him.

Alkali in his remarks called on the union to educate the people on its role in the transformation agenda of the government.

He also called on it to work harder in reaching out to the grassroots as the closest tier of government to the rural populace in the country.
