CALABAR— FIVE persons were, over the weekend, burnt to death in Uyangha, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State when their apartment caught fire.

The victims whose names were given as Miss Gift Edet and her two sons, Ezekiel Edet, Okon Goodnews Edet, Miss Glory Edet and her daughter, Covenant Edet, were said to have retired to their apartment when the place was engulfed in fire at about 11pm.

According to an eyewitness, the women and other family members, held a meeting that evening over the burial arrangement of their late father but there was a disagreement with their elder brother said to be a top government functionary.

“They disagreed with their brother’s plan to raise a building in the premises before the burial as he demanded that he be given sometime to execute the project before the burial,” she said.

Our source said the women objected to his request and insisted that the burial go ahead, saying their father had been living in the house ling before he died.

It was few hours after that meeting that fire burnt their apartment “but surprisingly, the fire burnt only the women and their three children while all the property in the house were not touched.”

The victims who were rushed to the Mambo Hospital along Atamunu later died as the burns were severe.
