BRT vandalism: Military appears before tribunal, gets approval to recall witnesses

By Abdulwahab Abdulah

The military yesterday appeared before an Inquiry Tribunal into the July 4 road   traffic accident crisis at Palmgrove Bus Stop in Ikorodu Road, Lagos with a request to recall three witnesses who had earlier testified before it.

The appearance came two days into the sitting of the tribunal, a situation which raised the insinuation that the military would shun the panel.
The Lagos State government had inaugurated the tribunal to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the crisis which led to the alleged vandalism of some Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicles by some soldiers and suggest the way forward.

At the resumed hearing of the tribunal, it granted permission to the Nigerian Army to recall three witnesses, Razak Mustapha, Ikechukwu Umeaku and Dapo Adediran all employees of Mutual Model Transport Ltd., sub-operator of the LAGBUS, for cross-examination by the army legal team led by Lt.- Col. Hycinth Ande.

The witnesses had earlier testified before the panel chaired by retired Justice Ebenezer Adebajo on Tuesday and Wednesday, where they gave accounts of how their buses were allegedly vandalised by the soldiers.

They alleged that the mayhem was perpetrated by soldiers who were protesting the death of their colleague allegedly killed by a BRT bus.
