Even though she is not yet a top gun in the Nigerian music circuit, Onome Okumagba, a graduate of public policy and management from York University,Toronto, Canada who recently returned to the country is a breath of fresh air in the country’s music terrain.
After the release of her acclaimed hit track Alhaji Onome has been working in the studio and recently released a highlife tune titled Chale. In a chat with Showtime, the talented songstress talks about the fact that her song Alhaji isn’t promoting young girls dating rich men.
Hear her: “The song Alhaji is just talking about certain kinds of relationships in Nigeria .I have been here for almost eight months. The Alhaji song is about a certain type of relationship where you have girls dating men that are rich and have the money to take care of them. The Alhaji in this case is a metaphor for rich married men who give these girls money .Really the choice is up to the girls to either succumb to the tricks of the Alhaji or go out with a regular guy who is not as rich as the Alhaji but can take care of them .The song is just a social commentary on this kind of relationship. It’s not inspired by a personal experience, it’s just from my observations .You know how ladies meet and talk about their experiences with certain men in the society.”
