FCT to build toilets in strategic locations

The FCT Primary Health Care Development Board says plans are underway to build toilets in strategic locations in Abuja.

Dr Matthew Ashikeni, Director, Disease Control Department of the board, announced this at the National Task Group and Sanitation meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

Ashikeni explained that the move was designed to ensure improved sanitation in the city with emphasis on reducing open defecation in FCT.

Ashikenu blamed open defecation on lack of functional sanitation facilities in public places in the city.
He called for attitudinal change among residents of Abuja, adding that the board had embarked on sensitisation of the public to understand the need to refrain from open defecation.

The director said the project would involve private sector. “This will engage individuals who will build and manage the facilities’’, he added.

Ashikenu said that consultations with area councils were ongoing to ensure successful implementation of the project.

He added that when established, the toilets would help in preventing outbreak of communicable diseases in the city.

“With this on ground, FCT communities will enjoy good sanitation. (NAN)
