A LAGOS State governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Owolabi Salis, has said that a diversity-based democracy will help address ethno-religious conflicts in the country.
In a statement, yesterday, Salis said that the proposal, if adopted by delegates to the ongoing National Conference, will lead to restructuring of the country.
Salis said: “One best solution is to practise a form of democracy called equitocracy; an equity based system that helps to reduce and or eliminate all the above vices at the same time.
“With this system, Nigeria will assume the name Federal Equity Republic of Nigeria or Equity Republic of Nigeria.
“Nigeria’s diversity is shaped by ethnicity and religion. We have witnessed many conflicts because of these two diversities. Voters tend to vote for their ethnic or religious group instead of voting for ability to perform.”
He added that the first step towards a diversity-based democracy is to conduct “diversity intelligence of Nigeria.”
