Expert decries high rate of abandoned projects

BY DAYO ADESULU

LAGOS — A project management professional, Dr Sammy Ojigbo, has condemned the high rate of abandon projects, describing it as the bane of infrastructure development in the country.

The project engineer who retired recently from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, blamed the situation on the lack of requisite skills to handle  projects and urged the country to build capacity in such area.
He said: “Project failure is a very common phenomenon in Nigeria; ranging from small, medium to major projects at the government, private and individual levels as a result of poor project management and poor maintenance culture for the commissioned projects.

”Everywhere you look, you will see cases of abandoned projects, which is a direct consequence of lack of proper project management resulting mainly from the lack of project management skills and processes.”

Ojigbo, who is also the chief consulting officer of Nemwas International Limited, a business and education services consulting firm, noted that execution of projects on the basis of distorted tribal or political sentiments coupled with corrupt intentions is likely to produce uncompleted quality projects.
