YENAGOA – A community youth leader identified as Morris Jonathan has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Akenpai suburb of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital.
The deceased, aged 34, a former chairman of Peremabiri community development committee, and civil servant was reportedly shot dead yesterday at about 1 am at his residence.
Peremabiri is an oil rich riverside community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Though the reason for the killing could not be ascertained, sources told Vanguard that the gunmen, six in number, killed their victim without removing anything from his residence.
The gunmen were said to have stormed his residence and fired sporadically before entering their victim’s bedroom and shot him dead.
According to eyewitnesses; “The gunmen, who hid under the cover of darkness, claimed to be concerned youths of the community and were seeking his advice on matters concerning the community development.
“But what we heard later were gunshots. When we got to the scene, the killers had escaped and we saw his corpse on the floor in the pool of his blood.”
His remains had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
