Rivers judge makes case for girl child education

PORT HARCOURT— FIRST female lawyer and judge from Ogba kingdom in Rivers State, Justice Chioma Ada Okirie, has urged parents to increase commitment to education of the girl child.

Justice Okirie stressed the necessity for equal education for female children when Ogba Lawyers Forum decorated her with an excellence award at Omoku to commemorate 10 years of the forum’s existence.

Okorie, who became judge of the Rivers State High Court in 2003, said: “My father gave me the foundation to acquire higher education against the advice of close friends at a time the society considered it a waste of resources to train a girl child.

“My husband, who married me early, built on my father’s foundation.
“Things have changed a lot; better than what it was when we were growing up. But then apathy towards girl child education is still there.
“I challenge our girls and women to strive to reach for greater heights and Ogbaland would be better for it.”
