Anambra poll: CNPP demands apology from Jega

BY CHRIS OCHAYI

ABUJA—Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, yesterday asked the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, to apologise to Nigerians over the flawed voters’ register he used to conduct the recent governorship election in Anambra State.

The CNPP, which made the demand via a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, in Abuja, said instead of Jega apologising over the dubious voters’ register, he heaped insult on the sensibilities of Nigerians.

The CNPP quoted Jega as informing participants at the quarterly meeting with political parties in Abuja that “Let me use this opportunity to categorically affirm that while our Register of Voters is not perfect, it has requisite integrity and it compares favourably with any Register of Voters on our continent. It is certainly not as bad as some are strenuously trying to make it appear.”

The statement read:  “CNPP had thought that after wasting over N80 billion in the Voters’ Registration exercise Professor Jega should be apologetic, remorseful, introspective and circumspect for underperforming and producing less than perfect register of voters.
