Coach Sewnet Bishaw says his players’ passing game is going to give them victory over the Super Eagles in this weekend’s 2014 World Cup first leg playoff match in Addis Ababa.
“I feel confident that our passing game would make the difference when we play the Nigerians. It will be tough but our great passing game, which is like that of the world champions, Spain, will give us the needed victory”, Bishaw said.
Ethiopia captured the hearts of fans at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, with their great passing game, which reminded all of the tiki-taka style adopted by Spain in the lat four years.
Spain’s style was so effective in their 3-0 spanking of Eagles in Brazil and as Ethiopia battle Nigeria on Sunday, Bishaw expects his troops to toe a similar line against their more illustrious opponents at the Addis Ababa Stadium.
“We can do what Spain did against the Nigerians. We showed glimpses of that when we met them at the Africa Cup of Nations”, Bisha told Ethiopian Herald.
In the meantime, football fans in Ethiopia are ecstatic about their team’s achievements.
Throughout the capital’s streets, giant portraits of the team are hang on high-rise buildings while state-owned channels air adverts in between regular programming, promoting the eagerly-awaited ties as “180 minutes before history is made”.
Bishaw is satisfied with the state of the game in Ethiopia. Recent success has meant more sponsors in the domestic league and higher salaries for the players.
“Ethiopian football will continue to grow,” he said.
