WARRI- TWO feuding factions of the Ohaneze Ndigbo in Delta State have headed to different courts in Effurun and Warri to protest and put into effect the cancellation of the Igbo Day celebrations in Warri, 29 September, by the national headquarters of the body.
The faction led by Chief N.E Eze approached an Effurun High Court, 25 September, urging it to restrain the Inspector General of Police, Sir Peter Chukwu and 12 others, from “harassing, interrupting or doing anything that may diminish or negatively affect the celebration of Igbo Day on September 29” by the applicants.
Another group, led by Deacon Jerry James, took its case to a Magistrate Court in Warri. It prayed the court to restrain Chief C.V.C Okekenta and others from going ahead to celebrate Igbo Day in Warri against the directive of the national body.
The national headquarters of Ohaneze Ndigbo in a letter, dated September 18, addressed to the Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, signed by the Secretary-General, Dr. Joe Nwaorgu, intimated him of the cancellation of Igbo Day celebrations in Warri.
After hearing the motion ex-parte by O.C Eze for applicants, presiding Judge, Justice Ikede , ordered that the respondents should be put on notice “to show cause why I should not grant the reliefs sought by applicants in this case.”
He adjourned the matter to October 2, while Chief Magistrate E.A Odjugo, Wednesday, ordered that the claim, motion on notice and all other court processes on the suit by Deacon James and others, be served on Chief Okekenta and other defendants.
“In view of the urgency of this matter and to prevent a breakdown of law and order, this court shall in view of the affidavit of urgency, take this application on Friday, the 27th day of September, 2013,” the court ruled.
