LAGOS—A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship hopeful in Lagos State, Mr Owolabi Salis, has advised the party to allow President Goodluck Jonathan contest the 2015 presidential election under its platform, saying Jonathan going for a second term will perfect the nation’s democracy and diversity as a nation.
Salis, who was supposed to contest for the National Publicity Secretary of the party at the Special National Convention in Abuja before the election was suspended, gave this advice at a press briefing on the fallout of the convention, yesterday, in Lagos.
Salis said: Jonathan is the leader of our great party and the President/Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Therefore, since he is eligible to contest, the party should allow him without any dissent. It is not a consensus of Nigerians that power must shift elsewhere. You cannot enforce an agreement with the head of an institution.
“Jonathan is the head of PDP. Rotational democracy, as being canvassed by other stakeholders in the Nigerian polity, is undemocratic and does not bring value. What I think that we should do to reform our democratic system is to entrench diversity-based democracy. It will bring equity, curb electoral fraud and stop ethnic and religious crisis.”
On the crisis in the party and fallout of the special national convention, Salis said: “The crisis in our party, the PDP, can be likened to a revolution taking place in the party, which I think will eventually shape the party.”
