Ondo – Olawale Edun, promoter of the monthly “Saturday Boxing Show’’, is impressed by the invitation of four boxers from Lagos State to the National Boxing Federation (NBF) national camp.
The boxers– Olaide Fijabi, Joseph Otto, Christian Abua (male category) and Teniola Are (female category)– are among 50 invited to to camp ahead of the World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan in October.
Edun told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone on Saturday that Lagos was taking its rightful place in local boxing and was also on its way to doing so in international competitions.
He said that the talents and the sterling performances of the boxers were spotted at the NBF National Boxing Open Championships held in Lagos in August.
Edun, the Lagos State Boxing Hall of Fame (LSBHF) boss, told NAN that he was impressed that the state was reaping the benefits of the monthly boxing show, which enhanced the fitness of the boxers for the NBF open championships.
“I am impressed that four of our boxers have been called to the national camp because of their performance at a national boxing competition.
“Since the inception of this programme, Lagos boxers have reclaimed their rightful position in the National Sports Festival and soon, will take their position in international competitions,’’ he said.
Edun, who is also a former Commissioner of Finance in Lagos State, said that he would sustain the Saturday Boxing Show in order to discover more budding talents who would be nurtured to stardom.
The e monthly Saturday Night Boxing Championship is a monthly amateur boxing event organised by the LSBHF and the Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association, where elite boxers across the state test their might in the ring. (NAN)
